WHAT IS PROPOLIS

Propolis is a wax-like substance collected by honey bees from bark and tree leaves. Propolis is formed when nectar, pollen and wax are combined. It is used as a cement to seal cracks in the hive. Its color varies from white, green, brown, red and even black, depending on its source. Honey bees use propolis to seal any gap inside the hive that is smaller than 5mm or 6mm.

Bees use the propolis to reinforce the structural stability of the hive, reduce vibration, and defend the hive as well as to prevent diseases and parasites. Bees normally carry waste such as dead larva out of and away from the hive, however they have been known to seal large, unmovable, intruding carcasses in propolis, which mummifies them and protects the hive from disease.

Propolis is widely used for its antibiotic and antifungal properties. It is used to stimulate the immune system and to promote health, energy and longevity.

HISTORY OF PROPOLIS
